Are You Keeping Good Oral Hygiene Habits?

Here are some simple tips for promoting a healthier smile.

You’ve been caring for your smile for years, so chances are good that you have your habits in place. But how good are your current habits? With all of us spending more time at home, now is the perfect time to improve our current oral care routine to make sure that we are receiving the best results possible from our daily habits. Along with visiting your Auburn, CA, dentists, Dr. Dan Gustavson and Dr. James Dunn, for routine checkups, here are some things that you should be performing every day,

Brush twice a day and floss at least once daily

Everyone should brush their teeth in the morning and at night, which equates to brushing your teeth twice a day; however, if our Auburn dentists have told you that you are at an increased risk for cavities, you should brush your teeth after every meal and snack. Every time you brush, remember to brush for at least 2-3 minutes.

Furthermore, flossing removes food particles, bacteria, and plaque from between teeth, making it easier for all these harmful elements to be brushed away. Floss at least once daily to stave off gum disease and other serious dental issues.

Limit Acidic Foods and Drinks

Everything from citrus fruits to sodas contain acid, which can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Therefore, it’s important that you limit any and all acidic foods and drinks. After consuming these items, do not immediately brush your teeth, which will only push the acid around your teeth. Instead, rinse your mouth out with water as soon as possible and then wait 30 minutes before brushing.

Enjoy Sugar in Moderation

What you eat has a major impact on the health of your teeth and gums and just as acidic foods and drinks can cause decay so too can a diet high in sugar. While we know that completely avoiding sugar is really tough, and that everyone deserves a sweet treat every once in a while, it’s highly recommended that you limit the amount of sugar you consume every day. Use a fitness app to keep track of the foods you eat. You may be surprised how much sugar is in your current diet.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, Auburn Dental Aesthetics is closed for all routine dental checkups and care; however, if you are dealing with a toothache, broken tooth or other dental emergency your dentists can still help.
